Understand the Step By Step Process of Building a Ship

There are various methods of construction a model ship, but one of the easiest is the ‘sandwich’ or ‘built-up’ method. It adds cutting out horizontal layers of a fitting material like sheet styrene or balsa in the shape of the hull’s waterline plan, then the plan of the next deck up, and so on until all the decks are represented. They are all fixed together, one on top of the other, using an appropriate adhesive, and the hull sides are then sanded smooth to remove any inconsistencies between the layers.

Ship Building for Beginners:

The basic Ship Model shapes of the lower hull and the armored superstructure glued together. They are made of balsa wood. In order to hide the wood grain that have glued a thin strip of paper around the circumference of each component; this gives a smooth surface to the sides. The tiny production in the bottom right is the flying bridge or ‘hurricane deck’ which will be mounted above the hull. Extra layers have been added to the hull at the bow and stern. A catwalk has been added to the aft section, made of thin card with wire ‘staples’ as supports and wire ventilators. A penny is shown for scale.

Small details were made of wire and boats were made of card & paper; cut a base of stiff card to mount the model on. Before mounting it, cut a similar-sized piece of paper with a hole similar to the hull shape in the middle. The inner edges of the paper were turned up and fixed in the raised position with PVA glue. This simulated the bow & hull waves and wake in a very simple manner.
